The Best Salt Storage Containers

What’s the best way to store the most important seasoning for your food?

What You Need To Know

The best salt storage containers are sturdy, hold a useful amount of salt, are easy to fill and access, and protect your salt from kitchen splatter and humidity. Our winner is the BEE HOUSE Salt Box 16 oz. This solid and roomy model held 2 cups of salt, so we didn’t have to fill it often. Its wide opening made it easy for even large-handed cooks to access the salt inside. Our Best Buy, the Totally Bamboo Salt Cellar, holds less salt, but it costs less than half the price of the winner. While its light weight made it easier to knock off the counter by accident, some testers preferred its more compact size and secure magnet closure.

We like keeping a salt storage container next to the stove while we cook. This makes it easy to season a steak or a pot of boiling water on the fly. While a small prep bowl could be used, a dedicated container looks a little nicer while also protecting the salt from splatter and humidity. There are two basic kinds of salt containers. Salt pigs are open-mouth, often cylindrical vessels, while salt boxes have lids and tend to be slightly smaller.

What to Look For

  • Salt Boxes: We vastly preferred salt boxes, as they came with lids that provided protection from both humidity and food splatter. Despite their lids, most also turned out to be simple to open with one hand.

We found salt pigs (left) harder to fill and use. They also left salt exposed to humidity and splatter. We preferred salt boxes (right) with wide openings and lids.
  • Easy Access: We liked models with relatively large openings at their tops. These were easy to load with salt and access from above.

Our winning storage container allowed for easy access when cooking or seasoning a dish.
  • Moderate Weight: Containers that weighed around one pound were less likely to tip over or be moved on a countertop than lighter models.

What to Avoid

  • Salt Pigs: Salt pigs often have wide openings, but these openings are located on the sides, not the top, of each vessel. This made them harder to fill and use. Both models we tested forced us to tilt the salt pigs to fill them with salt, which was awkward and still resulted in some spillage. Because the salt pigs had no lids, food spattered their contents, and the salt clumped from humidity.

The Tests

  • Fill each container to capacity
  • Have users of various hand sizes remove salt
  • Leave containers in a humid environment to test for clumping protection
  • Leave containers near simmering pots of tomato sauce to test for splatter protection
  • Bump each container 10 times to see how well the salt containers stay put on a countertop

How We Rated

  • Stability: We evaluated how sturdy the containers were when bumped and jostled.
  • Ease of Use: We rated the containers on how easy they were to fill, open with one hand, and access.
  • Cleanup/Humidity Protection: We evaluated how well the containers protected the salt from humidity, clumping, and food splatter.

WinnerBEE HOUSE Salt Box 16 oz

This sturdy flip-top salt box held plenty of salt and provided easy access to it, accommodating most testers’ hands. While somewhat vulnerable to humidity, this box was great at shielding salt from messes. Best BuyTotally Bamboo Salt Cellar

With a lid that fastened with a magnet, this salt box—the least expensive in our lineup—was easy to open, fill, and use. It kept out moisture and messes about as well as our winner. Our only gripes? It didn’t hold a lot of salt, so it needed more frequent refilling, and it was lightweight, making it easy to knock off the counter.

Cover: Yes

Weight: 4.8 oz

Capacity: ¾ cup

Material: Bamboo, neodymium iron boron magnet with nickel plating

RSVP Endurance Salt Server with Spoon

This utilitarian flip-top salt container was easy to fill and use, decent at protecting against humidity, and great at protecting against splatters. But with several removable glass, metal, and silicone parts, it was precarious to lift as a unit. A tiny serving spoon was cute but ultimately not all that useful, dispensing less than ⅛ teaspoon of salt.

Cover: Yes

Weight: 13.3 oz

Capacity: ¾ cup

Material: Glass, stainless steel, silicone

Dimensions: Cylinder; 4.5-in diameter, 3-in height

Emile Henry Salt Pig

Sturdy and large, this salt pig looked promising. But its shape made it tricky to fill and awkward to use; the pig also failed to protect the salt from direct tomato sauce splatters (it did, however, best the open bowl in this test, and you could turn the opening away for further protection). Worse, its unglazed clay interior drank in moisture, creating the most extensive salt clumping seen in this testing.

Model Number: 850201

Cover: No

Weight: 16.6 oz

Capacity: 1 ¾ cup

Material: Burgundy clay

Dimensions: Bent cylinder; 4-in diameter, 5-in height

Le Creuset Salt Crock

A shallow bottom rim limited the actual capacity of this large, expensive salt pig; the whole thing had to be laid on its side to be filled. Its flat top made access uncomfortable for large-handed testers. It provided no protection against moisture and only limited protection from direct splatter (although, again, it was better than a prep bowl, and splatter protection could be increased by turning the opening away from the stove).

Cover: No

Weight: 18.4 oz

Capacity: 1 ½ cups
