Why This Recipe Works
This gin-based drink uses the addition of more neutral-flavored vodka to help lengthen the botanical gin flavor while still allowing the delicate, fruity Lillet to come through. Kina Lillet, which is no longer commercially produced, was an aromatized aperitif wine that contained quinine. Lillet, a similar product that is slightly more citrusy and less bitter, makes an excellent substitute. For our take on this iconic Bond cocktail, we started with the original recipe ratios, but tasters found the drink to be too strong and gin-forward. After testing our way through various combinations, we found that 2 parts gin to 1 part vodka and 1 part Lillet created a more nuanced, well-balanced cocktail. Though originally ordered shaken by Bond (naturally), we stirred our version to avoid too much dilution given the lowered amount of gin. So whether you're a British secret agent saving the world or you're just watching Bond do it on the silver screen, this Vesper is just right for the job.
