Before You Begin
We prefer our homemade Orgeat Syrup in this recipe; you may substitute a store-bought version, if you like.
Instructions
- Add rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, simple syrup, and liqueur to cocktail shaker, then fill with ice. Shake mixture until just combined and chilled, about 5 seconds. Strain cocktail into chilled old-fashioned glass or tiki cup half-filled with crushed ice. Top with additional ice and garnish with lime slice and mint sprig. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works
For our Mai Tai, we preferred using an aged rum and paring down the ingredients. We also liked the look and aroma of a lime slice and a mint sprig for garnish, but traditionalists may prefer using the spent lime half to create a miniature island with a mint sprig “palm tree” floating in their drink, as Trader Vic envisioned. No matter how you garnish it, we think you'll agree that our Mai Tai lives up to its out-of-this-world origins.
