Air-Fryer Whole-Wheat Pita Chips with Salt and Pepper

Ingredients

1 (8-inch) 100-percent whole-wheat Pita Olive oil spray ⅛ teaspoon table salt ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper

Before You Begin

Traditional pita also works well here. This recipe can be easily doubled.

Instructions

  1.  Using kitchen shears, cut around perimeter of pita and separate into 2 thin rounds. Lightly spray both sides of each cut round with oil spray and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cut each round into 8 wedges.
  2.  Arrange wedges into two even layers in air-fryer basket. Place basket into air fryer and set temperature to 300 degrees. Cook until wedges are light golden brown on edges, 3 to 5 minutes. Using tongs, toss wedges gently to redistribute and continue to cook until golden brown and crisp, 3 to 5 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes, before serving. (Chips can be stored in airtight container for up to 3 days.)

Why This Recipe Works

Store-bought pita chips are tasty but homemade chips are more flavorful and fresh, and they're easy to make. We chose to use whole-wheat pita and separated an 8-inch round into its two component layers. We sprayed the split rounds with olive oil and seasoned them with salt and pepper before cutting them into wedges—much easier than spraying and seasoning each individual wedge. In a traditional oven, we would arrange the pita wedges in a single layer on a baking sheet to facilitate even cooking, but the gently circulating heat within the air fryer meant that we could pile the wedges into two layers that would cook quickly and evenly in the compact space; we tossed them once halfway through cooking.
