Why This Recipe Works
The Godfather cocktail has its roots in the 1970s and the eponymous movie. It is a two-ingredient drink of Scotch and amaretto. There is no definitive build, just the intention of taking the edge off the whiskey with the marzipan- and cherry-fragranced liqueur. We riff on this classic by introducing some Irish—in the form of smooth Irish whiskey. Godfather proportions can vary wildly, from equal parts to the 8:1 ratio of whiskey to amaretto that we favor. Our goal here was simply to smooth out the whiskey without masking the subtleties of the triple-distilled spirit. While it was not traditional, we loved the minor adjustments of adding orange bitters and an orange twist, as a nod to the memorable scene between Marlon Brando and his grandson in the film. Think of these as simply seasoning a beautiful spirit.
