Why This Recipe Works
For some visitors, Manhattan can feel a bit in-your-face—and the namesake cocktail is similarly bold. A trip to Monte Carlo, on the other hand, might be luxurious and easy, like this cocktail made with Bénédictine and Peychaud’s bitters instead of sweet vermouth and old-fashioned bitters. The swaps soften the edges of a classic Manhattan, so it becomes more approachable. Bénédictine makes the drink sweeter and more spice-forward, dialing back on the herbal, bitter notes of sweet vermouth.
