Sesame-Orange Spice Blend

Ingredients

¾ teaspoon grated orange zest 2 teaspoons sesame seeds 1 ½ teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon pepper ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Before You Begin

This blend is inspired by shichimi togarashi, the Japanese seven-spice blend. Store the blend in an airtight container for up to one month.

Instructions

  1. Place orange zest in small bowl and microwave, stirring every 20 seconds, until zest is dry and no longer clumping together, 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes 30 seconds. Stir in sesame seeds, paprika, pepper, garlic powder, ginger, and cayenne.

Why This Recipe Works

Shichimi togarashi is a Japanese seven-spice mix. Instead of using dried orange peel, we stripped zest from the fruit and briefly microwaved it to dry it out. Cayenne pepper and black pepper provided a spicy kick, and sesame seeds, paprika, garlic powder, and ground ginger rounded out the mix.
