Sesame-Orange Spice Blend

Ingredients
¾ teaspoon grated orange zest 2 teaspoons sesame seeds 1 ½ teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon pepper ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Before You Begin
This blend is inspired by shichimi togarashi, the Japanese seven-spice blend. Store the blend in an airtight container for up to one month.
Instructions
- Place orange zest in small bowl and microwave, stirring every 20 seconds, until zest is dry and no longer clumping together, 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes 30 seconds. Stir in sesame seeds, paprika, pepper, garlic powder, ginger, and cayenne.
- Sprinkle over udon or soba noodles, rice, soft-cooked eggs, french fries, or grilled meats

Why This Recipe Works
Shichimi togarashi is a Japanese seven-spice mix. Instead of using dried orange peel, we stripped zest from the fruit and briefly microwaved it to dry it out. Cayenne pepper and black pepper provided a spicy kick, and sesame seeds, paprika, garlic powder, and ground ginger rounded out the mix.
