Why This Recipe Works

The British pub favorite known as a shandy is a refreshing combination of lager and lemonade, but the concept sometimes loses something when made on the western side of the Atlantic. The problem? The word “lemonade,” which in the United States denotes the familiar cloudy, still beverage but in the United Kingdom refers to a bubbly citrus-flavored soft drink. Our version is closer to the British version because we start with lemonade concentrate and dilute it with seltzer instead of still water. This shandy is so lemony and bright that there's no need for the customary lemon wheel garnish.
