Three-Ingredient Bread

Ingredients

3 cups (14 ¼ ounces/404 grams) self-rising flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 (12-ounce) bottle mild lager, such as Budweiser

Before You Begin

Do not substitute all-purpose flour for the self-rising flour, or your bread won’t rise.

Instructions

  1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 8 1/2 by 4 1/2-inch nonstick loaf pan.
  2. Stir flour and sugar together in large bowl. Stir in beer and mix until smooth dough forms. Transfer dough to prepared pan. Bake until toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out with no crumbs attached and top is light golden brown, 35 to 40 minutes.
  3. Transfer pan to wire rack and let cool for 5 minutes. Remove loaf from pan and let cool completely on rack. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works

Using self-rising flour kept this bread’s ingredient list short. Self-rising flour already has salt and leavener mixed into a low-protein flour, so all we had to do was add a bit of sugar to balance the tanginess of the mild lager.
