Flavored Salts for Fries

Ingredients

Rosemary-Lemon Salt

1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary ½ teaspoon grated lemon zest

Warm Spiced Salt

1 tablespoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground cumin ½ teaspoon ground coriander ¼ teaspoon paprika ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Chili Salt

1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon chili powder ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more, if you like)

Before You Begin

It's easy to jazz up plain fries (or almost anything) by flavoring the salt. We prefer to use kosher salt because its larger crystals add crunch. Use any of these three variations for our Super-Crisp Steak Fries (see related recipe) or any other savory seasoning application. If you prefer, substitute 1 1/2 teaspoons table salt for the kosher salt.

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a small bowl.

Why This Recipe Works

We found it was easy to turn ordinary salt into an interesting seasoning for fries and more by adding other ingredients. For a bright, herby salt, we added minced fresh rosemary and grated lemon zest. For a salt with warm, earthy flavors, we added cumin, coriander, paprika, and cayenne. For a salt with garlicky heat, we added chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and cayenne.
