Why This Recipe Works

For an old-fashioned, warming mug of mulled cider, we steeped fresh orange and lemon slices, cloves, allspice berries, a cinnamon stick, and a piece of fresh ginger in apple cider. For a bit of spicy bite, we added whole peppercorns to the pot, too. To ensure an attractively clear mulled cider, we strained the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth.
