2 teaspoons sesame seeds ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon kosher salt Pinch cayenne pepper (optional)4 (8-by-7½-inch) sheets nori 2 tablespoon water 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

The less-shiny, rough sides of nori sheets stick together better than the very shiny, smooth sides. Not sure which side is which? Run your hand lightly over the nori sheet to see if it feels rough or smooth.

Instructions

  1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In small bowl, combine sesame seeds, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne (if using). Use spoon to stir until well combined.
  3. Shape nori sheets into triangles and season following photos, “Step-by-Step: How to Shape and Season Nori Chips,” below.
  4. Transfer nori triangles, seasoned side up, to parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Place baking sheet in oven. Bake until chips are slightly shriveled and sesame seeds are golden, about 8 minutes.
  6. Use oven mitts to remove baking sheet from oven and place on cooling rack (ask an adult for help). Let chips cool on baking sheet for 10 minutes. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works

Move over, potato chips, there’s a new crispy snack in town, and it’s packed with vitamins and nutrients: nori chips. They’re fun to eat and they’re also fun to make—kids will have a blast folding, brushing, and cutting the nori sheets to form triangle-shaped chips. This recipe also features two sesame-based ingredients, sesame seeds and toasted sesame oil. Have kids smell and taste each of them. Do they notice any similarities? Toasted sesame oil is made by toasting sesame seeds until they’re golden brown, and then pressing the seeds to extract their oil. The sesame seeds on these nori chips will toast while the chips bake. See if kids notice a color change in the baked seeds. Do they smell more like toasted sesame oil after baking?
