Fighting a Grease Fire

Fighting a Grease Fire

If you follow our tips for frying safely, the chances of a grease fire are very low. However, if you end up with a grease fire, you should know what to do. Let's start with what not to do: DO NOT DOUSE A GREASE FIRE WITH WATER, which will cause additional splattering. Call 911 if you feel the fire is beyond your control, but your immediate options, in order of preference, are listed here.

1

Cover the Pan

A lid cuts off the oxygen that fuels the flames, thereby extinguishing the fire. Covering the pan should be the first thing you do if a grease fire ignites.

2

Smother the Fire with Baking Soda

First, you'll need to locate the box, and then hopefully, you'll have enough to smother the fire (it takes a good amount), so baking soda isn't the most practical solution.

3

Use a Fire Extinguisher Designed for Home Use

Although effective, a fire extinguisher will cover your food and utensils with chemicals, so they'll need to be discarded afterward.
