¼ lemon, cut into 4 pieces, plus lemon slice for garnishing1½ ounces Tea Liqueur 1 ounce vodka ¾ ounce Citrus Syrup with lemon2 ounces seltzer, chilled

We prefer our homemade Tea Liqueur made with black tea in this recipe, but store-bought versions will also work.

Instructions

  1.  Add lemon pieces to base of cocktail shaker and muddle until broken down and all juice has been expressed, about 30 seconds. Add liqueur, vodka, and citrus syrup, then fill shaker with ice. Shake mixture until just combined and chilled, about 5 seconds.
  2.  Pour contents of shaker into chilled collins glass (do not strain). Add seltzer and, using bar spoon, gently lift tea mixture from bottom of glass to top to combine. Top with additional ice and garnish with lemon slice. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works

To get the most lemon flavor, we muddled a cut lemon to extract all of its bright acidity and citrusy aroma. Initially we then added only the Tea Liqueur—our version made from black tea infused into vodka—along with Citrus Syrup made with lemon, and shook our drink until it was well combined and frosty. After some tasting, we found that we needed to balance the tea and lemon flavors further, because too much Tea Liqueur made the drink tannic and astringent. So we incorporated some plain vodka. Pouring the entire contents of the shaker right into the glass, with seltzer to top everything off, resulted in a citrusy, tart, and refreshing tea and lemon cocktail perfect for summer sipping.
