Why This Recipe Works

Marinating the asparagus in a thinner salty-sweet glaze (minus the sesame seeds) imparted intense flavor that stood up to the heat of the grill. We supplemented the soy sauce with ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes; instead of honey, we preferred brown sugar for its deeper, caramelized flavor. Because the sesame flavor of our Grilled Sesame Asparagus dissipated on the grill, rather than use the sesame oil in the marinade, we reserved some of the marinade and added sesame oil to it.

Before You Begin

Toast the sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until golden, about 5 minutes.

Instructions

  1. Whisk soy sauce, vegetable oil, sugar, garlic, ginger, and pepper flakes in shallow dish. Add asparagus and toss until well coated. Let marinate at room temperature for at least 15 minutes or up to 1 hour.

  3. Add grilled asparagus to dish with reserved marinade. Add sesame oil and toss until asparagus is well coated. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve.
