Coffee Negroni

Ingredients

2 ounces (¼ cup) coffee liqueur 1½ ounces (3 tablespoons) London dry gin 1½ ounces (3 tablespoons) sweet vermouth 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) Campari 2 strips orange peel

Before You Begin

We like to serve these cocktails straight up (stirred with ice but served without ice); if you prefer, strain cocktails into chilled glasses half-filled with ice or with one large ice cube each. We prefer our homemade Coffee Liqueur in this recipe, but you can substitute your favorite store-bought coffee liqueur. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail just before serving to extract its flavorful oils.

Instructions

  1. Add coffee liqueur, gin, vermouth, and Campari to cocktail mixing glass or 2-cup liquid measuring cup, then fill three-quarters full with ice. Stir until mixture is just combined and well chilled, about 30 seconds.
  2. Strain cocktails into 2 chilled old-fashioned or coupe glasses. Twist the orange peel over each drink and then rub along outer edge of glass. Garnish each glass with peel. Serve immediately.

Why This Recipe Works

A negroni might just be our favorite aperitivo. It's sweet, yet complex, with a perfect and critical amount of bitterness. For a coffee version, we decided to play on the traditional 1:1:1 ratio of London dry gin, sweet Italian vermouth, and bitter Campari liqueur by stirring in some coffee liqueur. We pulled back just slightly on the Campari to ensure that the drink was perfectly balanced and not too bitter. Served in a chilled glass with a garnish of orange peel, this drink rivals the original.
