Ingredients

1 (3-inch) piece turmeric root1¼ pound carrots, unpeeled1 cup seltzer, chilled, divided¼ cup tonic syrup, dividedGround black pepper, for garnish

Before You Begin

Be sure to use fresh ingredients if possible. Ground turmeric can be substituted, but steer clear of store-bought carrot juice; the flavors are not as complex and detract from the result. We prefer to use our homemade Tonic Syrup and seltzer here; however, you can substitute 1¼ cups store-bought tonic water for the syrup and seltzer, if you like.

Instructions

  1. In order listed, process turmeric and carrots through juicer on high speed into 1-cup measuring cup.
  2. Fill 2 chilled glasses halfway with ice. Add ½ cup juice, ½ cup seltzer, and 2 tablespoons tonic syrup to each glass. Using spoon, gently lift juice mixture from bottom of glass to top to combine. Top with additional ice and sprinkle with pepper. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works

Inspired by cocktails and their delicate balance of flavors, as well as our healthful juices, we wanted to highlight carrot juice in an alcohol-free cocktail. Carrot juice is naturally sweet and earthy and has a striking orange hue. Turmeric is a rhizome known for its punchy and spicy flavor profile. Our Tonic Syrup, made with fresh citrus peel, lemongrass, and cinchona bark, has sweetness and bitterness but also floral notes. Together, these ingredients create an energizing way to enjoy their health benefits.
