Ingredients

2 ripe bananas, peeled¾ cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips Toppings (optional) (see note, below)

In step 3, you can sprinkle peanuts, sprinkles, sweetened shredded coconut, sesame seeds, or even crunchy cereal such as Rice Krispies over the chocolate-dipped part of each banana slice.

Instructions

  1. Line rimmed baking sheet (or large serving platter) with parchment paper. Place bananas on cutting board. Use butter knife to cut bananas on diagonal into ½-inch-thick pieces.
  2. Place chocolate chips in small microwave-safe bowl. Heat in microwave at 50 percent power, stirring occasionally with spoon, until chocolate is melted, 2 to 3 minutes. Use oven mitts to remove bowl from microwave. Stir chocolate until smooth.
  3. Dip half of 1 banana slice in melted chocolate (see photo, Step-by-Step: How to Dip Banana Slices”). Let excess drip off. Place banana on parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining banana slices. Sprinkle chocolate-dipped parts of bananas with toppings (if using).
  4. Place baking sheet in freezer and freeze until banana slices are frozen solid, about 45 minutes. Serve.

Why This Recipe Works

These two-ingredient chocolaty banana bites are the easiest after-school treat, and they only require 10 minutes of hands-on time in the kitchen. The youngest chefs can make them from start to finish: All they have to do is slice a couple bananas (they can use a butter knife!), dip them in melted chocolate, sprinkle them with optional toppings, and freeze them. It’s important to start with ripe bananas, or bananas that are yellow all over. If your bananas are green, they’re underripe. And if they’re very soft and covered in black and brown speckles, they’re too ripe—use those bananas for banana bread! When you’re in the grocery store, have kids peruse the banana selection. Do they spot any underripe bananas? Ripe bananas? Overripe ones?
