T-Fal Ultimate EZ-Clean Fryer

This electric deep-fryer made food that was almost always perfect and in the same time and number of batches as our Dutch oven. Its large basket holds lots of food and makes it easy to lower and lift that food during use; its high walls and lid contain messes nicely. And although all electric deep-fryers require a bit of work to clean, a built-in filter and handy oil storage container makes the process a bit easier here than with other models. One caveat: This fryer’s temperature range maxes out at around 374 degrees, so it can’t quite fry quick-cooking, high-heat foods, such as tempura, as nicely as a Dutch oven can. Read our review.

Braun MultiQuick 7 Hand Blender

We were impressed by this model’s comfortable grip and well-placed trigger-style power button, which increased or decreased the speed depending on how hard we pressed. Its scalloped, bell-shaped blade guard—which had no vents or gaps—kept food circulating freely and prevented splattering. This blender also consistently churned out silky soups and smooth mayonnaise. It was short enough to maneuver fairly well, but its weight fatigued many testers’ hands after about 30 to 45 seconds of blending. Read our review.
KitchenAid Grain and Rice Cooker

This rice cooker turned out perfectly cooked brown and white rice every time. We were delighted with how easy it was to operate; the responsive touch screen shows you a big selection of menu options. You choose the type of rice or grain and the desired texture (firm or soft), and then you add the amount you’re cooking. The screen then tells you the total weight (in cups, grams, or ounces) as the built-in scale measures. You don’t need to add water up to a specific line in the bowl as with other machines. Instead, you fill a water reservoir attached to the machine ahead of time, and the machine dispenses the correct volume for the amount and type of rice you want to cook. Read our review.

This highly rated air fryer is a breeze to use. Selecting menu options on the responsive touch screen is straightforward and intuitive. This air fryer cooks everything quickly and within the recipes’ suggested time. We liked the lock button on the handle of its drawer, located where our thumbs naturally fall when grabbing the drawer. Pressing the lock button releases the drawer from the machine and automatically stops cooking, adding an additional layer of safety. Hamilton Beach Electric Knife Set with Fork and Case

This electric knife performed and handled very similarly to our top choice. It did a good job of slicing skin-on turkey and chicken breast. Its flexible blades hewed closely to the bone as we broke down the roasts, so we could get as much meat off as possible, and the knife made clean, intact slices. It’s easy and comfortable to operate, with a start button located at a natural position on the underside of the handle. Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

This air-fryer toaster oven consistently made the best food of any model we tested. We liked its clearly labeled knobs and digital interface that displayed the time, temperature, and cooking setting. It made excellent toast; produced tender, browned broiled asparagus; and made air-fryer french fries and chicken Parmesan on par with recipes made in our favorite traditional air fryer. Because it’s such a large enclosed space and the air-fryer basket is made from uncoated metal, the oven can be a bit of a pain to clean. Toshiba 6-Cup Rice Cooker with Fuzzy Logic

Our runner-up rice cooker model made delicious, evenly cooked rice in all our tests; its cooking bowl just lacked the helpful stay-cool handles of our winner’s. The light-colored measurement labels inside the dark-colored cooking bowl were easy to read. Our longtime favorite toaster oven aced all our tests, producing evenly baked cookies, tender-crisp vegetables, and crisp-skinned chicken. Its settings are intuitive and easy to use, and it’s programmable, so you can set it to remember your preferences, no fiddling with the dials. Though it took longer than other products to toast (about 5 minutes for medium toast), it was capable of making big batches of perfectly golden slices that were evenly browned from edge to edge. We love this instant-read thermometer. As its name indicates, it takes just 1 second to measure a temperature. It has a large, grippy handle; a rotating screen with highly legible numbers; and a backlight that goes on when viewing conditions are dim. It’s waterproof to a water depth of 39 inches for 30 minutes, it goes to sleep when not in use, and the display wakes up automatically when you pick up the entire unit. You can now use the thermometer when cooking on induction burners—the engineers at ThermoWorks have taken measures to eliminate the electromagnetic interference that sometimes occurs when you use digital thermometers with induction cooktops. ThermoWorks Sale Price: $36.75 (25% off of $49.00)
The ThermoPop 2 is accurate and fast. Although it’s small, it sports a large, clear, auto-rotating display. (A backlight can be turned on manually.) We wish its handle was just a tad larger and that its long probe folded out, but this is still a great bargain option for folks who don’t want to sink too much money into an instant-read thermometer. YETI Tundra 45
Sale Price: $260.00 (20% off of $325)
This ultradurable cooler outpaced every other model in cooling and durability, but it’s a bit heavy for the average person. Ice lasted a whole week, and when we placed sodas and ice packs inside, the cooler kept our beverages below 50°F for more than five days. We also loved its rubber latches, which were easy to close, and its durable rope handles. The cooler’s weight did make it fairly difficult for one person to carry when full. However, this is an excellent option and our top pick for a non-wheeled cooler.
AeroPress Clear Coffee Maker

This press offers a portable, easy-to-use design, which is perfect for on-the-go brewing, and can be stored neatly in a kitchen cabinet. Coffee from this press is smooth and rich and tastes just as good as the brew from its classic counterpart, if a little weaker than true espresso. The best part: We could adjust the ratio of coffee to water in this press’s spacious brewing chamber, allowing us to make up to 6 ounces of a strong, rich brew that was still tasty when diluted. We were impressed with the seal quality, durability, and flat lids of this set. The containers each have a pair of latches that clip on securely, reinforcing the gasket’s seal. When we filled the largest container with blue water and shook it vigorously, we were pleased that the seal was so tight that no drops of water escaped. The gaskets were permanently attached; we liked that we didn’t need to remove them to clean the lids and that they were soft and flexible enough for us to easily get in the nooks and crannies with a kitchen sponge. Our Best Buy was accurate and easy to set up, with an app that was relatively simple to navigate and use to set temperatures. It came with two probes, so you can simultaneously monitor two pieces of food or food and air temperature. Like all Bluetooth models, the transmission range is fairly limited, so you’ll need to stay relatively close to the thermometer to get data. Read our review.

SKIP: BLACK + DECKER 2 Slice Toaster
We had high hopes for this affordable toaster, which has a very streamlined design that makes it easy to operate. Unfortunately, it just didn’t toast evenly, no matter what settings we tried. Bagels especially had entire sections that appeared completely untoasted. It was also a bit slower than most of the other toasters we tested.
GET INSTEAD: GE 2-Slice Toaster
Fortunately, our favorite conventional toaster is on sale. It produces toasted slices of white bread and bagels more evenly than the Black + Decker model; it’s also a lot faster.
SKIP: KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment
For home cooks who already own a KitchenAid Pro Line stand mixer, this attachment is a tempting option. We approved of its desserts, especially the “lush” sorbet, but quibbled with a few ice crystals. We also liked its speedy churning. However, the two-part paddle design was fussy and difficult to attach, and it was hard to fill the bowl without spilling. Its high horizontal blades got in the way of our thermometer and let clumps of sorbet or ice cream spin around on top unmixed, forcing us to stop the machine often to scrape down the bowl or take the mixture’s temperature.
GET INSTEAD: Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker
Our longtime favorite ice cream maker produced desserts that were “even-textured,” “velvety,” and “delightful.” We also liked its lightweight, compact design and the simplicity of its one-button operation. The paddle blades were fully submerged in the base and did not interfere with our thermometer probe.
SKIP: Rabbit Automatic Electric Corkscrew
This electric wine opener was confusing to use and slow to open bottles with both synthetic and natural corks. We couldn’t determine how much pressure we should use for the worm to pierce through the corks. The built-in foil cutter also didn’t work well. All in all, this opener required more effort to open a bottle of wine than other openers.
GET INSTEAD: Secura Electric Wine Opener
We liked this sleek and easy-to-use electric opener. It effortlessly pierced synthetic and natural corks with the push of a button. It opened over 30 bottles of wine in a row without losing charge and easily released all of the corks. It also worked quietly compared to the other models we tested.
